Denon AVR-3200 set up question

Posted by Mike Dopke [IP: 209.252.179.31] on May 26, 1999 at 00:21:33
Using Mozilla/2.02E-AIT (Win95; I):

I'm pleased to announce the arrival of my new Denon AVR-3200, which was delivered to me today. Spent most of the evening hooking it up and everything works fine - with one glaring exception: The Dolby Pro Logic seems screwed up. The receiver I'm "graduating from" is a Denon AVR-2000, which has always worked like a champ, so I kind of knew what to expect in the Pro Logic mode. The problem I am running into is that all the sound seems to be coming from the center speaker. When listing to CDs, all the speakers work great (I especially like the 5 channel stereo mode), but putting in a VHS tape and or HBO, I get dominance out of the center channel. I went so far as to set the two front speakers and the two rear speakers to +12db and the center channel to -12db, and I get some sound out the fronts and rears, but still the center dominates.

The way I figure it:
a) I totally missed something fundamental in the set up (I hope);
b) That's the way it's supposed to sound (which I would find unacceptable);
c) My receiver is broke :(ergo, the disadvantage of mail order).

I don't have a DVD palyer yet, and am thinking or renting one at the video store, just to see what that sounds like, but I still want to get a the root of my problem.

I would be most appreciative of any advice out there.
