on-screen display hookups

Using Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows NT):

I have a Yamaha DD receiver which has on screen display capabilities. All my video (VCR, DVD) is running straight into the TV. My understanding was that in order for the on-screen display to work, I have to run the video into the receiver and then use the monitor out jack into the TV. I don't want to do this because I'm using component video for DVD, and my amp has no Component video inputs. Also is it not a cleaner video signal if you go straight to the TV? My question is how do I get the on-screen display to work in my situation?
