on-screen display hookups

Run an S-video AND composite connection from the receiver's S-video AND composite out to the TV's S-video AND composite in jacks. Connect the VCR's VIDEO OUT (composite or S-video) into the receiver also. Leave the DVD's "component" connections as they are. When you want to watch your VCR, let the receiver do the switching. IN this way, you'll get the receiver-s on-screen programming (via S-video, probably), the receiver will "handle" the VCR's audio and video, and you can still watch the DVD's via the component video connection. Does this help? FWIW, if you run the DVD's composite video AND 2-ch ANALOG STEREO into the receiver's VCR2/AUX (or similar) input, AND you connect your VCR's LINE INPUT jacks to the receiver's VCR1 LINE OUT (audio and video) jacks, you can DUB YOUR DVDs (assuming your VCR can handle the "Macrovisioned" composite signal). It'll be even better IF your VCR has an S-video input, you can use the DVD's S-video output instead for a better picture. :) Good luck. Feel free to ask for "clarification" if necessary... Ken
