Hallelujah! My problem actualy was a flaky cable - what are the odds. I really figured that to be a long shot as the culprit, but by golly, I bought some new cables and, wallah! The pessemistic lobe of my brain had visions of unhooking everything and shipping the receiver back to the vendor - pretty depressing thought.

Thanks for the suggestions, Ken and Ian. It sounded a little too obvious at first, kind of like the brain dead (no offense intended) suggestions you find in the "trouble shooting" section at the back of most owners manuals. But it made all the difference!

I'll probably have a few more questions as I get to know my new receiver.
