Using Sony 30es/50es with universal remote?

Using Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows 95):

Thinking about getting a 30es or 50es but am concerned about not having a learning, programable remote. I gather some of you are using these receivers with a universal. My question is, since there's no OSD or receiver display, how do you use the universal to control the receiver? Any comments would help.
