Bob: A general rule of thumb with amplifiers is that you need to double output power to obtain a noticeable (3DB) increase in volume. Thus with your 40w rear channels you would need to double the output to 80w/channel to obtain the 3DB increase you are looking for. An easy way to do this is with the addition of a 40wx2 power amplifier. (preferrably from the same manufacturer as your receiver, but not imperative). I'd suggest checking local A/V shops or check manufacturer websites such as Yamaha, Denon etc. and see if you can find an appropriate amplifier. Hope this helps, Dave.
