Bob, I don't want to piddle on anyone's parade, but unless you plan to play only old vinyl records, and very quietly on top of it, 40W will not handle the dynamic range of CDs or any other digital source - so you are on the right track in wanting more juice. Without knowing how sensitive your speakers are (dB/m/w), I can't tell you how big an amp you need, but let me share this with you: last weekend a friend of my tried to convince me that a 50W/ch amp will do in any house ... until I've hooked up my power meter onto each speaker, and shut him up for ever.(Speakers were 88dBm/w, amp 2x100W RMS). Now comes the crunch: playing C. Dion's Mountain High River Deep (or something along those lines), you will bring the house down if you feed it even 5W average (this song is almost like pink noise - it has just about every frequency in it and is recorded close to 0db). I actually blew one my crossovers once with this song, because the amp was clipping (we are talking about 150W peaks - and yes, it was loud). On the other hand, playing the Titanic soundtrack on the same volume setting, the loudness is just nice, but the peaks were shooting sky high above 100W - the dynamic range is enormous on this track, and so are the low ends. So much for my friend's 50W bliss. The more, the better.
