Why all the Sony-bashing?
Posted by Rob Loewy [IP: 198.133.22.75] on June 28, 1999 at 15:52:31 In a recent thread, someone asked for an opinion of receiver X, Y, and a Sony ES model. Only one of the several replies addressed the Sony at all, but it did so by saying, "...if you can't say anything nice..." Other than a battery-eating remote control (every remote seems to have at least one significant drawback), Sony's new ES line of receivers (333/555/777) appears to have fixed the one specific shortcoming frequently mentioned here - the lack of six channel inputs. Nonetheless, I find the "Sony isn't as good as receiver X or Y" sentiment to be rather common by frequent posters to this forum, but I don't recall seeing specifics - exactly what is the issue with the Sony ES line? Are they somehow legitimately deficient in design or manufacture? Do they fail (require service) more often? Are they harder to use or set up? Do the engineers and technicians among you find not enough difference in design quality between the ES models and the mass-market Sony line? Thanks in advance for specific, articulate responses that could be very useful to many of us considering purchasing a new receiver.
