New Onkyo 656 says "Protect"!?!

Using Mozilla/4.5 [sv] (Win95; I):
hi,
I just got a brand new Onkyo 656 today, hooked it up and powered it on. BUT
it only stays on for about 5 seconds,
after that it flashes "Protect" briefly
on the display and then powers off!!!
Can somebody please tell me what to do?thanks!
