Speaking for myself, the Sony ES series seems to be the same marketing trick as the Pioneer Elite series, IOW it seems to be aimed at people who want a mass-market box so EVERYONE recognizes the name, but want to be able to tell their friends (picture nose in air) that it is a prestige model and it cost $xxxx, so it has to be way better than {whatever the friend has}.

In fairness to Sony, I did not try one out (it was not available in Canada when I bought). I did intend to try one but the look of fear on the sales staff's faces when I mentioned comparing to Rotel and Yamaha convinced me not to wait...
Not a very good reason to "bash" Sony ES, but what can I say, it was enough to convince me that dollar for dollar your money is better spent elsewhere.

What I'd like to add, is, don't let our opinions sway you. If you're searching for reinforcement or justification from us, you'll probably end up with a Proceed PAV/PDSD combo and a lineup of Krell monoblocks! (do I hear "quad-amping"?) Listen to the Sony and then the next level up, (I would consider this to be Onkyo, Marantz, or even a little more up to Denon, Rotel, and Yamaha). If you don't think these blow the doors off the Sony, then why not buy the Sony? Then get on the board and use your experiences to convince others to take a listen to the Sony. I think the apparent absence of these type of people says something about the ES line already...
