Why all the Sony-bashing?
Posted by Andrew DeMaio [IP: 170.252.240.1] on June 30, 1999 at 12:49:35 In Reply to: Why all the Sony-bashing? posted by Rob Loewy on June 28, 1999 at 15:52:31: A now, a word from soneone who actually OWNED and USED a SONY ES50: I have been mystified by the amount of criticism the ES line has gotten on this forum. I owned one for four months, loved it, thought it sounded great for both home theater and music, and found it very easy and intuitive to use. I, like others, also HATED the remote, but since I have a universal remote, I programmed 90% of the functions from the Sony remote into my uni, and rarely touched the Sony remote again. The reason I ultimately gave up the Sony was simple: my home theater set-up lives in a cabinet I built into my wall. The physical measurements of the Sony were such that there is only an inch and a half between the back of the receiver and the back of the cabinet; the heat build up was too great, and so I needed to find another solution. For the record, I replaced the Sony with a Yamaha 995, which is about one and a quarter inches shallower than the Sony (still not gobs of room, but the heat build-up has not been a problem). I had to pay $280 more for the Yamaha (from Uncle's in NYC), and ended up selling the Sony to my father, who loves it, too. Bottom line: I believe the Sony sounded and performed just as well as the Yamaha. The Yamaha has the six-channel inputs (the Sony does not) but I would not even hazard a guess when or if that will become an issue for me. Would I rather still have the Sony? Performance wise, its a toss-up, but I sure would like to have that $280 to spend on DVDs, guitar strings, and good wine!
