It's funny how non-owners like to bash the Sony line (I guess it's a little like Mickeysoft or Apple, you love them or hate em). Since I fall under the category of having to used several sets, here's some old impressions on SOny vs. the Yamaha:

Wanted to convey my impressions of both receivers to those that are interested in both models. I had the RV795 unit ($795) for almost 1 month before turning it in for the Sony 50ES unit (bought a couple of days ago for $849), due to the fact that I wanted to run all Sony components (WEGA, D550, etc.). Here's just some quick comparison (i'll be happy to answer any questions or comments).

Design: Sony definitely wins kudos for the configurability of their receiver (which had a really good manual). The Commander remotes takes a while to get accustomed to but can be really powerful, though the ability to automatically turn off my WEGA can be annoying at times.

Features: I found that the Yamaha had better, more useful Sound fields, but the Sony had more control and was very easy to manipulate all the speakers. Again, the commander controls is pretty darn good once you figure out how to setup it up.

Performance: I would say the Sony had a slight edge in clarity on my Klipsch Micro Quintet system with a Klipsch 12" active subwoofer. Two thing that really stood out was 1) my rear fills were noticeably more present and 2)my center channel was exceptional clear and vocal compared to before. I haven't cranked it up yet, but the 100Wx5 channel should be on better or at least on par to the lower rated Yamaha unit.

The only thing I haven't really played with is the video input selector. This is because neither has the component video output to my WEGA! :( I tried the SVIDEO input out to my Yahamha previously and i noticed some degredation in image quality, so have always connected my DVD directly to the DVD. All in all, I would definitely recommend the 50ES over the 795. Maybe a better comparison should be the 995, but that's another story altogether.
