Don't forget that DVD-Video is MPEG encoded, so the analogue storage space requirements are somewhat different. NTSC laserdisc, for example can contain PCM, analogue L/R audio and video, but PAL only has room for the video and PCM. But once again, laserdisc is an analogue format.
