I have the Yamaha RXV995 with Paradigm Mini-monitors and am quite pleased with the setup. I do not think it sounds overly bright (though I would usually prefer it a little on the bright side anyway). I was set on getting the Yamaha receiver and debated a long time on a set of speakers within my budget. The dealer that I worked with to get my receiver and speakers did not see any problem with this combination and has sold this configuration fairly often.
You may want to get the receiver on a trial basis and try it out in your home setting. One of the most important aspects is getting the acoustics and speaker placement optimized so you may want to try various setups in your tests. Good luck.
