The H/K AVR75 does make a good preamp/tuner (I have one and use an H/K PA-5800 5 channel amp with it all the time). I can't say for sure how your Carver will sound, I expect more "bite" than the sweeter H/K sound. Are you having a particular problem with the H/K setup you have now?

As for speakers, if we compiled a list of really good bookshelf or monitor speakers in your price range, the list would be HUGE. My thoughts lean toward Paradigm Studio series, B&W (model changes will bring out some bargains), Polk and NHT. Why not post a speaker opinion question over in the speaker section - you will get a lot of feedback there.
