Sony 530D to Digital Ready Receiver Question
Posted by Ken Simmons [IP: 208.8.211.21] on July 30, 1999 at 10:28:43 In Reply to: Sony 530D to Digital Ready Receiver Question posted by Matthew Michael Maher on July 29, 1999 at 15:35:23: Question: does your Sony have a BUILT-IN Dolby Digital decoder or is it just "Dolby Digital-READY" (i.e. NO built-in decoder - just a cluster of 6 RCA input jacks)? If the receiver has the BUILT-IN DECODER, just connect the DIGITAL COAX (RCA) OUTPUT of the DVD to the DIGITAL COAX INPUT of the receiver. Of course, you'll have to "assign" that coax input to a device selector switch (i.e. VCR2, VDP). It's also advised to connect the ANALOG (stereo) outputs of the DVD to the line inputs of the same device you "assigned" the coax input to. I type this BECAUSE there are some DVDs with MONOPHONIC (DD 1.0) or "simple" STEREO (DD 2.0) that play better with the ANALOG feeds, rather than the digital AND you may not be able to access some sound modes (i.e. Hall, 5-speaker stereo) using the digital feed while playing DVD movies. If, however, your receiver is "Dolby Digital-READY" (no decoder), you CAN NOT use the digital feed - you need the ANALOG line feeds. In this situation, you can only get PROLOGIC (Dolby Surround) decoding from movies. To get full Dolby Digital, you need an EXTERNAL DOLBY DIGITAL DECODER with the 6 RCA line outputs to connect to the corresponding inputs on your "Dolby Digital-READY" receiver. NOTE: there are external decoders that decode ** BOTH ** Dolby Digital AND DTS inputs, so you can have "the best of both worlds". Finally, I advise you DO NOT use the "virtual enhanced surround" function of your DVD deck. If I understand this function, it's designed for "simple" stereo receivers (no ProLogic decoder) to deliver a "faux surround" effect from 2 speakers (Perfessers Robinson, Pond, Maier, etal - please correct me here if I'm wrong! :) ). I hope this helps? :) Ken
