I too am starting my home theater system. After being steered away from "consumer" grade receivers (Sony, Technics, Kenwood), my choices are now down to the Yamaha 595 (DD but no DTS), Yamaha 795 (DD and DTS) and the new Onkyo 575.

I am leaning towards the Onkyo 575 but it's not currently in stock in Canada :-( It should be arriving soon, so hopefully I can hear it in person. I did audition Mini-Monitors on the Yamaha 795 in a theatre room using the DTS Demo #3 - WOW! I could not believe the output on the Mini's. The clip from Daylight (with the fireball rapidly coming towards you) on the Mini's made it feel like you were going to get burned :-)

You really can't go wrong with the Yamaha/Paradigm combination but take a look at the Onkyo as well.
