If you say that it has been working for over a year, then maybe the REC2 output of the A1 is damaged. You did not say if you could record any audio fro your LD player when you connected the tape deck to the REC2 output.

You also did not say if you were getting any audio when you were using one of the VCR outputs on the A1. If you are maybe you should stay with that option and have the A1 checked by a service technician. By using the VCR1 output and the REC Out selection switch on the front panel, you can get an alternative audio source to your Pioneer whilst watching/listening to another on the A1.
