In addition to each review being to some degree a subjective assesment, there is also the issue of matching the amp to the pre and the speakers. The same amp can sound very different when connected to different peripherals - so I will report back on my experience with the Anthem. Being able to get loaners is a BIG advantage of buying at your local dealer - one I am willing to pay extra for.

One thing I did notice about the Anthem is the low damping factor (it is listed as 130 at 20 Hz, if I recall correctly). I wrote to Sonic Frontiers about this and Chris Johnson (President of SF) responded as follows with regards to the MCA-5's low DF relative to amps like the ATI 1505 (Chris: I assume it is ok for me to publish your response - my apologies if not!!):

"Once you reach about 50, it means almost nothing...whether it is 100, 200, 500 or 1000...the output impedance of the amplifer is extraordinarily low. The effect of a high damping factor (over 50) is to allow the total overall system frequency
response to remain flat....not to be effected by the impedance curve of the loudspeaker...that is the problem with most tube amplifiers (especially single-ended designs). The difference between 130 and 1000 is about .002dB in frequency response
variation at some point between 20Hz and 20 kHz......this is totally inaudible.

The difference in the number (between the MCA5 and the ATI) is simply a matter of length of speaker wire from the amp module to the output binding posts...a fraction of an ohm!

By the way, damping factor does not, as many wrongly believe, have anything to do with bass extension and control....the speaker cable, binding posts, crossover and driver voice coils have a much more dominant influence on damping
factor than does the amplifier output impedance."

So I will give the Anthem a try.

Thanks,

Jose
