Connecting a DVD with DD decoder to a power amp?

Murray on October 16, 1999 at 11:07:16: This could be a tricky situation and I hope some of the more experienced people here will add some of their input as well. This is my take on the question. I am assuming that you would want to use the DVD player for HT as well as music. For HT, the major problem that I can see is speaker calibration unless you have attenuation pots on the amp. You will also have to do without delay settings. The plus side is you won't have a bunch of silly DSP modes to irritate you. Assuming that you have the pots and can live without the delays, you will need 6 variable analog outputs capable of 2v output from your DVD player to connect to your amp, if you plan to use the DVD player for HT use. Regarding the playback of 2-channel stereo I don't see how you will connect the DVD to the amp if the amps inputs are utilized for HT channels unless the DVD player senses stereo and automaticly selects two of the amp channels by itself. Also you must be certain that the low level outputs on the DVD player don't revert to full output after power of/power on. Alot of CD players do this when used as stand alone preamp/players. I nearly had a heart attack when mine did it the first (and last) time. Quite disconcerting to say the least. A little advice should you decide to try it. Test the level control funtion of the DVD player on the dealers amp and speakers. Odds are they can better afford the new speakers if the level reverts to max.
