why the wierd volume levels?

Using Mozilla/4.05 [en]C-AtHome0404 (Win95; U):

It's dB of gain in the pre-amp stage. So the -60 to 0 part represents attenuation in dB, 0 to +15 represents gain in dB. At 0 dB the pre-amp's output is at, or should be, exactly the same level as its input. Really a pre-amp shouldn't add gain, just attenuation.
