Powered sub just buzzes on LL sub out

Using Mozilla/4.04 [en]C-Citicorp (Win16; U):

Hooked up a Toshiba SSW1020 to the line level sub out of my JVC RX-884VBK, and it just buzzes/hums constantly with no change, even when the receiver is off. Disconnecting the signal cable from the sub or the receiver stops the buz. How do I know if it's the receiver or the sub at fault? (I know the receiver is set up properly, ie. subwoofer=yes, etc.)
