Barry,
I recently purchased a JVC-RX884 from a Montgomery Wards here in TN. After only a few minutes of watching the GoldenEye DVD I noticed a "hiss" during quiet passages of the movie. After unplugging everything from the unit, I still noticed the hiss coming into play at about the "60" range of volume, which was at exactly the volume I was enjoying the movie. After switching off the Dolby Digital I noticed the hiss went away and the volume went up considerably. My amateur guess is that they don't use a discrete amp for all five channels in this unit, so when they try to "split" the power for the five needed for DD the amps jsut aren't up to the task. I have since returned the unit after a demo of another that did same thing and am saving for a Yammy rxv995.
