Help! Cheap pream/processor

Using Mozilla/4.04 [en] (Win95; I):

As I understand, most pream/processor (AC-3 + DTS) price $1000 and up
Can't afford seperates now
Thinking about a cheap receiver ($500 range with built-in AC-3 + DTS) with pre-outs then upgrade(buying more powerful amps) when I have more $$
Please explain the differences between the two setups
Would appreciate any input
Also, indicate prices if possible
