Video switching question for Yamaha owners

Posted by George W. Marutz II [IP: 208.200.237.145] on February 27, 1999 at 15:10:55
Using Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows NT):

I am considering the purchase of a RX-V995. I would like to know the best scheme for routing my video through the receiver.

I have a 32" television with one video input. The input can be connected through either s-video or composite (RCA). My VCR has composite output only, no s-video. I have yet to buy a DVD player but I'll assume it can be connected through s-video or composite.

How would I route these through the receiver? I wish to use an s-video link to the television and from the DVD player. However, where does this leave my VCR? Can I mix and match composite inputs and s-video inputs when using the receiver as a video switch? That is can I connect the TV to the monitor out on the receiver through s-video, connect the DVD player to video1 on the receiver through s-video, and connect the VCR to video 2 on the receiver through a composite connection?

Can the Yamaha do this?

How about other brands like Denon, Onkyo, Sony, Marantz?
