Is having DTS important to you? Do you have DTS material? You can save yourself some money getting a Dolby Digital receiver or separates that are upgradeable to DTS when and if there is more DTS material produced, but if it is important here is the best you'll find on a budget. The Harman Kardon PA 5800 5 channel power amp available at www.jandr.com for $400, and the Sherwood AVP 9080 Dolby Digital and DTS pre/pro for around $800-$900 as the best value/$ combo available. $1200 - $1300 will not buy anything nearly as good (separates or receiver) I do not know more than the many positive comments I read about the Sherwood, but the HK PA 5800 is a steal at $400. It is the best 5 channel amp available for under a grand. I have one, and it is great for both music and theater in a small to moderate size room.A good Dolby Digital receiver that has 5.1 channel inputs for future upgrades to DTS or whateer comes along, and preouts for an external amp (if needed) is the Onkyo 656 available at www.jandr.com for $600. This is an excellent receiver with plenty of power.
