LFE channel of Dolby Digital

Posted by John [IP: 152.202.137.163] on February 28, 1999 at 08:31:52
Using Mozilla/4.5 [en] (Win98; U):

Question about the LFE .1 channel of Dolby Digital:

When a receiver is set to Dolby Digital surround mode and a DVD is playing connected by the digital coax cable, does the receiver only send LFE to the subwoofer that is broadcast on the .1 channel from the DVD player, or will the receiver's internal crossovers pull low frequency from the other channels and send that to the subwoofer as well?

The reason that I ask is that nothing seems to come from my subwoofer when my receiver is in surround mode, but when not in surround mode I do hear things coming from the subwoofer line out.

Is it possible that there is nothing encoded on the .1 channel of the DVD when it seems there should be (as evidenced by the fact that stuff does come out when surround is off, but not when surround is on)? Or is it more likely that something is wrong?

Please advise. Thanks.
John
