Why is 40% of my tv black on DVD's? Posted by Nigel Pond [SysOp] [IP: 153.35.11.170] on January 30, 1999 at 10:08:52: In Reply to: Why is 40% of my tv black on DVD's? posted by RJ on January 30, 1999 at 09:19:21: : Nigel, why do you ask? Only trying to help, old chap!! : I have tried setting up the DVD for 16:9 (my TV is a Sony 40" RPTV and cannot handle 16:9) and the faces elongate. Are there any other tricks? Well you need to distinguish between letter box and widescreen format. On my DVD player, widescreen is for those 16:9 enhanced DVD's which unless your TV is 16:9, leads to the squished faces you describe. With a non-16:9 TV your only options are to set up your DVD player for 4:3 playback or letterboxed, so you do not get the squished faces, but get the black bars... If you check out the main SMR site Stuart has a very easy to follow piece on correct TV set up for anamorphic and other aspect ratios.
