At present, there are no DVD-Audio players available, so there is little hard info. Meridian has just released revised software versions for its 561 and 861 that include MLP decoding, for example.

Unless and until the industry reaches finality on a standard that enables the DIGITAL output of a DVD-Audio stream, which is not likely at first, DVD-Audio players will do the MLP decoding themselves and output a 5.1 analog signal. This is, for example, what happens now with 24/96 on the vast majority of CD players -- the digital outputs are all downshifted to 44.1 or 48 khz sampling rates, while the on-board DACs decode at 24/96. None of this has stopped the DAC manufacturers from including 24/96 DACs in their units, however, for several reasons, including the likelihood of future ability to receive these signals digitally (some DVD players - Theta, Pioneer, for example -- can output 24/96 digitally now, although they are not supposed to!), not to mention marketing hype and keeping up with the Joneses.

The first generation of DVD-Audio players are likely to have a digital out that transmits only 48 khz sampling rates, and may not even transmit multichannel (who knows?). However, I expect that by the time the second generation hits the market, the digital transmission interface will be settled, probably as IEEE 1394 (Firewire), and all these processors can get busy decoding MLP data streams.

: I keep hearing that DVD-Audio using MLP will do all decoding and processing in the DVD-Audio players and have a 6 channel analog output to the pre-ins of the pre/pro. If this is the case why does the Meridian products, namely, the 561 and 861 offer MLP decoding inside the processors? Does Meridian know something we do not??? Will pre/pro's be able to process MLP after all???
