IMHO DVD-audio will be a dead duck until they coime up with a digital interface. Using 5.1 outputs is a really retrograde step. How many manufacturers will use high enough quality components and circuit design to make this worthwhile? and to make it only available to those whose receivers/processors have 5.1 inputs and analogue pass through and volume control....I don't think so. Those us without 5.1 inputs will not be taking that step backwards.

I also heard another interesting tidbit the other evening at a seminar given by Michael Hobson (pres and CEO of Classic Records). He said the the latest move on the digital interface front was Bob Stuart of Meridian getting together with the very few manufacturers who use the I2S digital interface, to approach WG-4 to make that the standard for DVD-audio. Apparently it can cope with longer cable runs than firewire, but I am not sure about its bidirectionality.
