MLP & Meridian a/v components Posted by Joel [IP: 199.107.32.222] on February 02, 1999 at 16:23:33 In Reply to: MLP & Meridian a/v components posted by Nigel Pond [SysOp] on February 02, 1999 at 16:16:01 Nigel, I could not agree more about the death of that duck. Why plunk down a few grand for a DVD-A player that only has analog outputs? Well, maybe some will, but given the likely dearth of software in any case, I think not. I certainly will not. I found your "tidbit" interesting, and consistent with what the Meridian guys have told me. When asked about this stuff, the guys in Atlanta clammed up but said "we're working on something very interesting on the digital connection issue, using available technology." I2S certainly fits the bill, although like you I have no idea about bidirectionality. There are at least 3 levels to the I2S spec, however, and one of them may have an aspect that lends itself to such communication. Meridian has been chomping at the bit to get their 800 CD/DVD machine to the market, and this is the main issue holding them up. Thanks for the news. : IMHO DVD-audio will be a dead duck until they coime up with a digital interface. Using 5.1 outputs is a really retrograde step. How many manufacturers will use high enough quality components and circuit design to make this worthwhile? and to make it only available to those whose receivers/processors have 5.1 inputs and analogue pass through and volume control....I don't think so. Those us without 5.1 inputs will not be taking that step backwards. : I also heard another interesting tidbit the other evening at a seminar given by Michael Hobson (pres and CEO of Classic Records). He said the the latest move on the digital interface front was Bob Stuart of Meridian getting together with the very few manufacturers who use the I2S digital interface, to approach WG-4 to make that the standard for DVD-audio. Apparently it can cope with longer cable runs than firewire, but I am not sure about its bidirectionality.
