: : I imagine that current processors without a "firewire" interface (if this is the digital interface chosen) will have to be replaced in order to take advantage of new multi-channel formats.

: Well, these guys are in the business of selling components, and we finance it. This game is becoming more like the computer industry every year. However, since there is not likely to be much software on the market for awhile, as the studios need to get all new equipment too, it shouldn't detract from the value of your current rig. Some processors are upgradeable (e.g., Theta Casablanca and Meridian 861) and can add a firewire or I2S connection, but you pay a premium for it. Whether it's worth that premium is up to you.

If they are not careful someone will come out with a fully computer-based approach. If you put a DVD video disc in a computer and look at it with Windows Explorer you see a directory "audio_ts" which is empty as well as "video_ts" which has the vob files(ie the video and sound track combined that DVD video players read). The DVD Audio will be in the audio_ts directory when such discs become available. It seems possible indeed likely that a computer DVD reader will be able to read the data from the audio_ts directory. It won't be difficult to decode from MLP and the latest card from Creative Labs uses I2S!! You just need better quality regarding the drive and the computer based solution might start to hold its own.
