Why is 40% of my tv black on DVD's?

: Well you need to distinguish between letter box and widescreen format. On my DVD player, widescreen is for those 16:9 enhanced DVD's which unless your TV is 16:9, leads to the squished faces you describe. With a non-16:9 TV your only options are to set up your DVD player for 4:3 playback or letterboxed, so you do not get the squished faces, but get the black bars...
