The answer to the question of how well a player deals with a layer change depends on the player and how well the disc has been mastered. A player have problems with some discs, yet have no problem with others (eg my Theta DaViD, based on a Pioneer transport, locks up at the layer change on Hamburger Hill but has no problem with any other disc). It also depends on where the layer change occurs. Some companies insist on putting them right in the middle of a scene, where they are very noticeable, on others you won't even notice as they are between scenes - and only looking at you DVD player's display for a brief "search" will give the game away.
