Toshiba 3109 layer change pause

I picked up the 3109 a couple of days ago and have noticed the same thing too. Even between scenes it's annoying.
The weird thing is that it only happens the first time you encounter the layer change. If you go back past it it goes straight through it without any pause. I'm wondering if this is because of a data buffer within the unit.

One thing I can't figure out is the option for 4:3 normal and 4:3 letterbox. The picture looks the same but is one from the disc while the other is 16:9 downconversion?

Other than that, I'm fairly happy with the box so far.
