Not likely.

Do this: connect the ANALOG (i.e. RCA audio jacks) outputs to your receiver and play these same discs using the ANALOG, not digital, audio feeds. If the problems persist, then CAREFULLY EXAMINE the surface of the problem discs for SCRATCHES. If the discs are clean, then the PLAYER IS AT FAULT.

If the problem discs PLAY PERFECTLY IN ANALOG MODE, then it's possible (however unlikely) the digital cable is problematic - try a new one. If the problem persists, then "it's a lock" the RECEIVER is at fault. If the fault "Goes Away", then your hypothesis of a bad digital cable is proven and I need to "update my database" on digital feed fault troubleshooting. :)
