In General Sony/ Columbia SBM (super bit mapping) disc sound much better than your average release. Also look for world renowned producers/ mixing/ mastering engineers: Bob Ludwig, Andy Wallace, George Massenberg, Eddie Kramer ... there are many others.

Here's a short list of great sounding CD's I've purchased recently:

Jazz:
Bill Frisell - Gone Just Like a Train
Dave Brubeck's Time Out - Sony/Columbia 20-bit remaster

Blues:
Boz Skaggs - Come on Home
Tom Wait's - Mule Variations
Lyle Lovett - Joshua Judges Ruth

Pop/Rock:
Beck - Mutations
Morcheeba - Big Calm
Pink Floyd - DSOTM - remastered by Alan Parsons
All Jimi Hendrix releases from the Experience Hendrix label
Gov'T Mule - Dose
XTC - Appple Venus Vol.1
Bob Marley - Exodus (MFSL Gold)

Other:
Buena Vista Social Club (Cuban)
Arto Lindsay - Noon Chill (Geek meets chic Brazillian/ no wave)
Waldemar Bastos - Pretzelutz (Brazillian/ Angolan produced by Arto Lindsay)

If at all possible, stay away from bands/ producers using drum machines ala Babyface and Jimmy Jam. IMO machine rythyms from these "pop/dance factories" lack dynamics, creativity, and the 3 dimensional space of live drums. If someone slipped these guys the phone number of a session drummer it would raise the bar of pop music listenability as we know it.

: looking for suggested listening in the jazz, classical,or rock/pop cd's which demonstrate HIGH quality engineering, performance, and production.

: if no ideas, but you know of other sites/forums dedicated to such a topic, please clue me in-

: thanks in advance.
