The original LDs were released way before the idea of the prequels was conceived.

When did Auntie Beeb start doing that? Must have been after I left in 1995 to go and live in the colonies!! Is that just on digital satellite or do they broadcast movies in that format on the terrestrial channels? US broadcasters have a lot to learn!
