Private Ryan: lens flare or defective laser disc?

Using Mozilla/4.6 [en] (Win95; U):

In several scenes on Omaha Beach, and immediately after the breakthrough to the hills above, there is noticeable lens flare. I assume this is an artistic technique. However, toward the end of the final battle, after Cpl. Upham shoots Steamboat Willie, and then releases the other Germans, the flare is so substantial that I wondered whether it might be a defect in the pressing of my disc. That does seem unlikely. Have others noticed this "problem" with the film exposure?
