: Does anyone know if progressive scan DVD players are coming out and if they are, when? Will they be able to play the DVD-A format?

Copyright protecttion issues are still bogging down the release of progressive scan (480p) DVD players - using the prog scan outputs defeats Macrovision.

Also the DVD-A format is bogged down a little too as they cannot agree the format for digital transmission of 24/96 digital audio from DVD player to receiver/processor. Hence the first batch of DVD-A players will only have 6 channel analogue outputs. Universal DVD players are unlikely to be seen until this issue is resolved, IMHO, and that could be a year or two more.

So I guess the short answer is "it depends" - on which issue gets resolved first and whether you will put up with a DVD-A player without a digital output (I will certainly not be rushing out to buy one). Also don't forget that to get the most from DVD-A, source material will have to be recorded, mixed and mastered in at least 24/96 format and most studios etc are not set up for this yet. It's pointless just reissuing old analogue or 16/44.1 CD material in 24/96 just for the sake of it, again IMHO.
