Ken,

: FWIW, I've discovered COLUMBIA/TRI-STAR DVDs "default" to the ANALOG (ProLogic) sound tracks. I have to perform the above steps to ensure I get the Dolby Digital feed "from the start". :)

Whoops! There's no such thing as analogue audio on a DVD disc, it's always digital. Think of it along the same lines as CD, there's no analogue audio on that either, the digital information is converted to analogue when it leaves the DAC, which in the case of a receiver would be after any decoding. No, the Columbia/TriStar titles default to 2-channel Dolby Digital (2/0.0) which is matrix encoded. This is a mistake on the part of the studio, but it does have its benefits, the 5.1 mix (3/2.1) isn't compromised.

What we have to remember is that if the audio isn't DTS, MPEG or PCM, it has to be Dolby Digital, but it's not necessarily 5.1 Dolby Digital. Incidentally, this goes for DTS and MPEG too, neither have to be 5.1. Some of the old Quad titles from DTS are 2/2.0 (that's front L/R, rear L/R with no centre and no LFE).

Stuart.
