Nigel,

: When did Auntie Beeb start doing that?

As Richard mentioned, a lot of BBC, CH4, CH5 and ITV output is anamorphic 16:9 these days. In the case of 'Jaws', the BBC used two prints, running simultaneously, a 4:3 pan & scan version for terrestrial analogue viewers and a 16:9 (a little wider in fact) version for digital viewers.

I'd never seen 'Jaws' in widescreen before, so settled down to watch. Do you know the bit where Brody says "You're going to need a bigger boat" after seeing the shark at close quarters? Well, that's where BBC 1 took a 15minute break for the news. Baskets!

ITV have ditched News at Ten so films aren't split into two sections. As soon as they did that, the BBC took over the mantle of annoying viewers by doing the very same thing.

Stuart.
