Jonas,

The purpose of the books used to specify the content of a Compact Disc is to ensure compatibility between disc and player. For a music disc to carry the CD-DA logo, it has to be playable, and by that I mean something more than full-scale digital noise, in every machine which carries the CD-DA logo. This does not apply to the DTS discs.

For a DTS music disc to be deemed any type of "CD" (which is a trademark used to describe a disc formatted in a specific way) it has to conform to one or more books. This is not the case.

If you take a look at DTS discs, you won't find an official Sony/Philips "Compact Disc" logo on any of them, except those from Telarc because they can't be bothered re-printing the inserts. ;-)

: There is nothing in the Red Book standard that specifies what kind of contents is allowed on the CD, and the CD-player doesn't really bother either.

But that's not correct, all aspects of data formatting including instructive flags for de-emphasis (if applicable) are detailed in the Red Book. Likewise the subcode areas, each identified by a letter, from P to W. The most important areas are P and Q, these are coded by the mastering engineer and contain the location of each track on the CD, inform if copying is permitted and whether the CD or track contains emphasis.

: If you drive the point to absurdity A DTS CD can be replayed on a usual CD-player using its internal D/A, period. The formatting is clearly Red Book compatible and being so it's a CD.

Sure, using your logic you can replay a DTS disc on a turntable because "it makes a noise" and it is compatible being round and flat. The key here is to appreciate that for a disc to be compatible, the player has to be able to play it in a recognisable way, not just spit out mush, or in the case of DTS full-scale digital noise, which is exactly what the Red Book specifications are in place to eliminate.

Stuart.
