CDR/CDRW: I am confused

Using Mozilla/4.61 [en] (Win98; U):

What is the current state of play regarding CDRs and CDRWs? The CDR/RWs that are available for computers apparently cannot record music or if they do, will not replay on a regular audio CD player. Can the audio players that do CDR/CDRWs be used to record computer data? If not, why not? Would appreciate a quick explanation on the current state of recordable CDs with particular emphasis on interchageability and compatibilty. Many thanks.
