: What is the current state of play regarding CDRs and CDRWs? The CDR/RWs that are available for computers apparently cannot record music or if they do, will not replay on a regular audio CD player.

I think you are confusing the format of the blank with the format of the finalised disc. Consumer standalone CD recorders cannot use data CD-R/RW blanks, but must use "audio" blanks - the only difference between them being that audio blanks have a code which tells the recorder that they are audio blanks. Audio blanks cost more because they have a royalty built into the price to take account of the record companies fears about digital piracy. So, to record on a standalone player, you pay more for your blanks. However once a standalone player or a CD-R/RW drive has finalised a disc to CDDA (Red Book) standard, they are to all intents and purposes the same and should play interchangeably in CD players, standalone CD recorders and computer drives. The only compatibility problems with finalised discs are that most DVD players cannot play CD-R discs, but they can play CD-RW discs (a factor of the colour of the disc dye and the laser colour).

Can the audio players that do CDR/CDRWs be used to record computer data? If not, why not?

Not at the consumer level - some pro machines like the Marantz CDR615/620 can be used as data recorders too. Consumer players are designed just to record in CD Red Book format. The companies take the view, I suspect, that if people want data drives they buy data drives.
