I may be one of the "other folk" Nigel to whom Nigel was referring.

Unit after unit of Toshiba's (first generation) DVD player model SD-3006 (top of the line at the time) had sporadic, often frequent, problems accesssing the 2nd layer of many DVD movies. Absolutely UNABLE to access the 2nd layer of CONTACT.

Toshiba U.S. was unable to repair the problem with CONTACT, even after their upgrade. Ultimately, they have promised a very nice resolution, and meanwhile we purchased a Pioneer DV-525 (so far so good).
