First, I am not arguing the superiority of Divx (I myself am firmly an open DVD proponent). I'm simply arguing for choice. However, I don't know where all of you are writing from (population size), but maybe DVD rentals are more ubiquitous than I'd thought, but in my city of 180,000 in Texas there are NO DVD rentals available. But if DVD rentals are becoming so commonplace, the case for Divx pretty much crumbles, as Divx's ONLY appeal is its rental-price vs. DVD purchase price.

: I am against DIVX because I want DVD to become as ubiquitous as VHS rental. VHS really took off when Beta died. A single standard is easier for everyone.

And a single standard IS easier for everyone, but format wars are MEANT to be fought in a free market, not avoided by killing off one format with propaganda and hyperbole.

: That's sheer rubbish. I live in a medium sized town in the MidWest. Within a 5 mile radius of my home, I have 1 DIVX vendor (CC) and 4 DVD rental outlets. (there are also 9 other vendors who only rent VHS)

I live in a city of pop. 180,000, and NO ONE carries DVD rentals. My only option is $6 for Netflix rentals (which I prefer over Divx, myself).

: DIVX will continue to be more scarce than DVD rental because the other consumer electronics retailers are not incented to put money in CC's pocket.

You're right, no video rental store would sell Divx titles; Divx COMPETES with rentals. It's an entirely NEW business model.

: I have never personally rented a bad DVD (about 40 attempts so far)... He also says their profit margin is far higher for DVD than VHS because DVD is more affordable and durable.

That's reassuring to hear. However, durability is still debatable. With digital technology, only so much data loss can occur before you get a near-unwatchable glitch, whereas a slightly damaged VHS tape can still be rented (though VERY annoying).

: Except for Blockbuster, the DVD rental outfits charge $1.99 for two nights...

Again, NOT available to me, nor to millions of Americans.

: HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! The founding fathers: 1. escaped from religious persecution and 2. established a socio-economic system marked by repression and exploitation. You're arguing the former, but I think that CC and their pettifogging partners better fit the latter.

First, the democratic, capitalistic system was designed to minimize repression and exploitation (the former of which anti-Divx'ers are equally guilty of attempting). Repression in a capitalist society is carried out by the rich vs. in communism where it is by those in office; at least everyone's got a chance to be rich (even Circuit City).
