: I have a DVD player but I never buy movies. I'd never watch them again. I rent 2-3 per week. I went with DVD becuase of the audio and video quality. I'm very concerned with Divx because in fact Divx does compete with DVD. They've negotiated exclusive releases and attempted to negotiate (but thankfully failed) exclusive studios.

I know it's confusing to many people, but Divx is completely distinct from DVD (or in fact any other format) due to its method of payment and delivery. It would NEVER have succeeded in replacing DVDs, as videophiles (myself included) would never have accepted it. This is what I meant by NOT competing with DVD; it's not in the same league as far as options available.

: Also, in your calculations you have totally ignored the fact that DVD rentals are everywhere for <$3.00 for two evenings - cheaper than Divx. The durability issue is not the problem it was thought to be.

I was not aware that DVDs were widely available; I live in a city in Texas of 180,000 and NOT ONE video store carries DVD rentals. My sister lives in Tustin, California, and there is nothing within a 25-mile radius (that we are aware of, and my brother-in-law is fairly resourceful).
