: But why try to limit other people's freedom to choose Divx?

Freedom of choice is the issue you keep coming back to, and ironically it's one of the strongest issues fuelling the anti-DIVX movement.

From its inception, the creators of DIVX never intended viewers to have a choice--they went to great expense to bribe studios into exclusive DIVX-only releases. And this is still a cornerstone bugaboo of Circuit City DIVX sales mantra--that many titles will ONLY be available in DIVX format.

If DIVX had tried to position itself on a fair and level playing field with open DVD, you wouldn't have seen anywhere near the vehement, outraged backlash. Instead, it's only because of that backlash that Disney, Paramount and Fox relented and agreed to open DVD releases. You owe your "freedom of choice" to precisely those protestors you condemn.

Be careful what you wish for.
