Stop the Anti-Divx Madness! Instead, it's only because of that backlash that Disney, Paramount and Fox relented and agreed to open DVD releases. You owe your "freedom of choice" to precisely those protestors you condemn. Why do we not see this level of outrage directed against Bill Gates and Microsoft? Divx is merely a business venture where they tried to protect their own interests with exclusivity agreements, which is nothing new in the business world. And I hypothesize that the outrage stemmed from discomfort with the radically different method of delivery of intellectual property, not because there were any new underhanded business schemes or any true trampling of our civil rights. (See my reply to Chris Williams.) You're right, good DID come out of the Divx-bashing. And as a DVD faithful (at least until HD-DVD arrives), I am happy with the success the DVD format is achieving. It wouldn't matter to me one bit if Divx dies. My protest was against the verbal bullying by the anti-Divx hotheads, and the fallacy that for DVD to survive, Divx must die. And truthfully, Divx only had a chance while DVD rentals were unavailable; with the rapid embracing of DVD by the rental stores, the Divx has lost its unique advantage: low up-front cost (vs. DVD purchase).
